This past year it was a delight for me to represent the Redlands Chamber of Commerce as your president. I want to thank the Board of Directors for their advice, guidance, dedication and time. Without their service the Chamber would not survive. A big thank you goes to those who served on our committees. We enjoyed the second annual Dog Jog in November. With all the positive input we have received, I expect this event will continue to grow.

The Government Review Committee did an excellent job of interviewing the 13 candidates for the City Council vacancy.

This year the Board has created a new event to promote our city. The New Year’s Eve Orange Drop! I’m excited to see this inaugural event taking shape. We are grateful for the city’s support and the backing from the downtown businesses. I truly believe that this event will be the beginning of making downtown Redlands the place to be on New Year’s Eve.

As we start the holiday season it is my absolute pleasure to wish you a very Merry Christmas and all the best in 2018. Thank you for your membership. Together our voice is heard as we promote local business and address important business issues

DEC 2017 – Member Profile – Asistencia Villa Rehabilitation & Care Center

Asistencia Villa Rehabilitation & Care Center is a 5 star rated facility by Medicare and Medicaid. They are a 99 bed skilled nursing facility located in Redlands, California. Acquired in 2010 and renovated in 2011, Asistencia Villa Rehabilitation & Care Center is one of the loveliest facilities in Southern California.

Although beautiful and comfortable, Asistencia Villa Rehabilitation & Care Center is a skilled nursing facility which provides several specialized programs to meet the needs of residents. First and foremost is our Stroke/Head trauma program designed to provide a high level of service to those with physical and mental limitations associated with head injuries. The rehabilitation team also excels in orthopedic rehabilitation for knees, backs, hips, etc. – both surgical and non-surgical.

In today’s environment, most skilled nursing facilities desire residents who will remain with the facility for only short term stays receiving skilled nursing or rehabilitation services. At Asistencia Villa Rehabilitation they are not only happy to return residents back to their home after only a short visit, but value their long term residents, the people they grow to know not only as residents, but as friends. It is this relationship that develops activity programs, creates menus, and makes the team better nurses, housekeepers, and managers. Knowing the residents makes it easier to provide a fuller and more enjoyable life for them at the facility. Their hope is that residents look at Asistencia Villa as their home and not as simply a nursing home, no matter their length of stay.

Asistencia Villa Rehabilitation & Care Center offers a premier Stroke/Head Trauma program designed to provide a high level of service to those with physical and mental limitations associated with head injuries. The program includes weekly physician rounds and registered nursing care 24 hours per day.

The facility also prides themselves on their Wound Care Program which provides treatment to a variety of wounds including those attributed to:

  • Venous insufficiency
  • Arterial insufficiency
  • Surgical sites
  • Traumatic injury
  • Pressure and Diabetes

To address these needs they provide weekly physician evaluations and designated treatment nurses for continuity in monitoring progress and effectiveness of rendered treatments.

Recognizing the clinical complexities already being provided by the staff at Asistencia Villa Rehabilitation & Care Center, they have submitted our application to the California Department of Public Health requesting that 24 of our beds be converted to a sub-acute unit. This will allow Asistencia Villa to further meet the needs of our community in providing much needed services to those residents who often times have difficulty finding placement due to their needs for a higher level of care usually provided in an acute care hospital.

DEC 2017 – Chamber announces Installation Dinner and Awards Ceremony

The Redlands Chamber of Commerce will present new directors and welcome new officers to the organization, Wednesday, January 25th, 2018, 6:00 PM at the Casa Loma Room, at the University of Redlands.

Immediately following the installation of directors and officers, guests will be treated to the announcement of the prestigious Man and Woman of the Year Awards and Police and Firefighter of the Year Awards. Each year those receiving the awards will join the ranks of extraordinary men and women who have gone before them and given generously of their time and talent to make Redlands a better place. The announcement of the winners of these esteemed awards are highly anticipated every year and kept secret until the night of the ceremony creating an air of excitement each year.

DEC 2017 – Who let the dogs out – The Redlands Chamber did!

On Saturday, November 4th close to 200 dogs were let out at Sylvan Park with masters in tow… heading out for a 5K walk.

As they gathered at the start tails were wagging, and proud pup parents were showing off. The DJ sounded the start of the event with “Who Let the Dogs Out” and it was clear the Redlands Chamber of Commerce did as the mega pack headed out.

Greeted at the finish line by enthusiastic volunteers, dog treats, water and official dog tags were handed out to every team. Some pooches more pooped then others, some owners suffering the same ailment but the fun was shared by all.

The Dog Jog could not have been possible without the generous support of race sponsors, Barich & Associates, Alta Vista Credit Union, All Four Paws Pet Services, SCE, Allstate Ins. Pacific Specialties Insurance Services , Super 8 Hotel. Storage West, Jam Sportswear and Cotton Gin Fabrics; what a team!

The volunteers that secured the streets making the adventure safe are to be thanked, without them the course would not have been open and accessible. Special thanks to the Officer Derek Olson and his team that kept the street closure to a minimum. The Dog Jog Committee though wee in size was mighty indeed, Chairman Daney Bachiu, committee members Jill Riley, Todd Underwood, Mike Hokana, Penny Adams, Randy Diaz, Nancy Mitchell, Marisa Nodine, Danielle Nodine and Dick Dawson along with staff really out did themselves.

We are extremely happy to report that a portion of the proceeds went to REDFOSA, the volunteer organization that assists the Redlands Animal Shelter find “fur-ever” homes for hundreds of dogs, cats and more, each year.

DEC 2017 – Employment Law Update

New California regulations took effect governing how employers can conduct criminal background checks and establishing protections to transgender individuals in employments. The California Supreme Court issued important rulings on rest break and “days of rest” requirements and then there are local ordinances, which continue to impose new and increasing requirements on employers.

California’s new criminal history regulations took effect July 1, 2017. The regulators reaffirm existing prohibitions on the use of criminal history information in employment and impose additional restrictions. If you conduct criminal background checks make sure that your policies comply with the new regulations.

Under new regulations, you can’t seek or use criminal history information in employment decisions if doing so would have an adverse impact on a protected class unless you can show that the information is job-related and consistent with business necessity.

In addition to existing notice requirements under federal and state law, the new regulations require you to notify individuals who are screened out because of criminal history and to give them an opportunity to provide information showing why they should not be excluded.

Wage and Hour

Employers should be aware of several changes to wage-and-hour laws.

With the passing of SB 3 last year California’s minimum wage will increase each year until it reaches $15/hour in 2022. The rate of increases depends on employer size – different rates apply depending on whether you have 26 or more employees or 25 or fewer employees. The Labor Commissioner issued guidance on how employers can determine whether they meet the 26 or more employee threshold, including which workers to count and what happens when the size of your business fluctuates.

 

 

DEC 2017 – Resolutions and promises will be wish by all on New Year’s Eve in downtown Redlands

The Redlands Chamber of Commerce and the City of Redlands have big plans for seeing in 2018. With the City’s efforts to enhance downtown Redlands throughout the holiday season, it only made sense that the “last hurrah of 2017” be a spectacular Orange Drop on the corner of Orange and State Streets.

Local restaurants and bars have embraced the idea of hundreds of revelers wandering from location to location as they anticipate the “drop”.

Bar tenders have been challenged to invent the very best Orange Drop Martini…. Patrons will be able to vote on the very best in town with a perpetual trophy awarded at nights end.

For years a similar celebration occurs in Time Square in New York City bringing thousands of visitors to the big apple. Smaller communities have their own “culture” driven drops including a pine cone in Flagstaff Az., a cowboy boot in New Mexico, a cheese wedge in Wisconsin and a peach in Georgia.

For those that want a more traditional way to see in the New Year, The Speakeasy on State is partnering with the event to present a spectacular dinner dance that will include, private parking, private Orange Drop viewing location, and all the trimmings of the traditional New Year’s Eve Party. Can you believe the holidays are here?  Thought I would encourage you to think about a couple of things before the spending begins.  Where you shop this season will have a major impact on our local economy.
Right here in our city we have a large selection of unique shops and restaurants, and a remarkable array of services.
Research shows that small businesses create more new jobs, put more money back into the local economy, and give nonprofit organizations greater support.
This season, I encourage you to avoid the crazy traffic and frenzied crowds. If you shop online make sure it’s at a local store and Support Redlands’ locally-owned and operated businesses; it’s a win-win for all of us. Don’t forget to Shop Small on Saturday, November 25th.
