City Council passes ordinance that provides preference for local businesses

In an effort to promote business retention, Redlands City Council recently agreed to provide an 8% preference for goods, equipment, services or construction to local businesses in the procurement processes for the City of Redlands. The intent of the ordinance is to promote economic health and encourage local business participation in the procurement process.

Local businesses are defined as having a valid Redlands Business License and having its principal business operation located in the City of Redlands.

Until the recent decision the local preference was just 1% a small differential that made little or no difference in the bidding process. The move to increase the local preference will encourage local vendors to participate in the procurement process and keep the dollars local.

While the Chamber has been focused on a Shop Redlands Campaign for years the City’s leadership in setting the new 8% preference for local businesses aids in delivering the message of keeping the dollars circulating in town.

Young Professionals Network hosted first successful Mixinar

In spite of the seasons first rainfall Redlands’ young business professionals showed up at Hanger 24 in full force for the premiere “Mixinar” presented by the Redlands Chamber Young Professionals Network Committee. The sold out event brought the 21 to 40 year old set out to network, socialize and hear from Mayor Pete Aguilar, the evening’s keynote speaker.

Hanger 24 was the ideal location for the event offering a comfortable setting that allowed attendees a familiar venue for networking outside the usual locations.

As the youngest Mayor in Redlands history Pete Aguilar serves as an inspiration to the next generation of business leaders. He challenged those attending to be creative to think big and come up with the next “big idea”. He acknowledged that success and position are not determined by age but rather hard work and determination. His message was clear that the torch will be handed over and the leadership needs to be ready, willing and able to receive it.

Those attending enjoyed food samplings from the Stockyard, Romano’s, Jose’s Mexican Food and Kiddough’s Bakery, and door prizes were provided by Hanger 24,

“The Chamber’s The Young Professionals Network offers diverse opportunities for personal and professional growth through social and educational activities.” said Megan Barich, committee chair person. “The committee agreed this Mixinar would be an excellent way to introduce ourselves, our mission and purpose. We are delighted with the out come. This is the first of many YPN events the committee worked hard to put this together and it clearly paid off.”

We are grateful to the Mayor for joining us and challenging us to “step up to the plate” in the business arena.

We are looking forward to making plans for the next Young Professionals Network event early in 2012.”
